THE ART OF MINDFUL RUNNING

Running Within: A guide to mastering the body-mind-spirit connection for ultimate training and racing, by Jerry Lynch and Warren Scott is a great book for beginner and expert runners alike.  For the beginner, this book serves as a training guide to help you succeed as a new runner.  For the seasoned runner that may be feeling a little burnt out from running, this book can help you to rekindle your passion and joy for running.

This book reminds me of that age-old tale of the Little Engine that Could.  Lynch and Scott discuss the importance of understanding and discovering ways to break through self-imposed limits.  Rather than give up because you think it is unrealistic to run a mile or to run a marathon, Scott and Lynch provide thoughtful insights to help you believe in the “I think I can, I think I can” mindset.

While this book is geared toward runners, I have found myself applying the principles and techniques from this book to swimming, competing in a masters level lacrosse league, and to just motivating myself to go the gym and workout.

Overall, Running Within provides concepts that can help all athletes find their inner motivation to be physically active and to enjoy what they are doing.
